This course is a survey of Shakespeare's dramatic works before and after 1600, with primary emphasis on the major comedies and tragedies and some attention to the histories, problem plays, and romances. The plays will be studied through close reading and application of performance-based, historicist, and other contemporary and classical approaches. Readings may include The Merchant of Venice, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, and The Tempest, among others.
