Seventeenth-Century Literature

The seventeenth century in England offers an exciting array of literature and features several distinct literary and historical movements. Primarily a period defined by the presence or absence of Stuart monarchs, this was also a time of complex and tumultuous historical developments, including aggressive colonial enterprises, a period of civil war, a repudiation and restructuring of monarchy, and widespread social and religious upheaval. Our readings will address these issues from various literary perspectives, and the course will attend to issues of aesthetics and criticism working in mixed modes of inquiry, perhaps privileging the historicist mode. Three credit hours.
